6-C Procedures and Rules
Welcome to Team 6 – C !!!
We are looking forward to a GREAT year! Here are a few things you might be interested in knowing before we meet you on Curriculum Night, August 28, at 6:00 p.m.
(These are in NO particular order.)
Team Teaching - This year your child will be involved in a team teaching setting. This means he or she will be changing classes and will have the following sixth grade teachers:
Ms. Christy – Science (schristy@scsk12.org)
Ms. Dawkins – Language Arts (ldawkins@scsk12.org)
Ms. Hume – Social Studies (ehume@scsk12.org)
Mrs. McIntyre – Math (lmcintyre@scsk12.org)
PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR CHILD’S HOMEROOM TEACHER SO WE CAN ADD YOUR DAYTIME E-MAIL ADDRESS TO OUR CONTACT LIST. THANKS!
Attendance – Please try to send your child to school everyday. It is difficult for a child to miss instructional time and to complete make up work. When your child misses a class, whether it be a whole day or part of the day, it is still their responsibility to complete assignments on time. All assignments and due dates will be listed on-line. This address will be written in your child’s agenda book during homeroom the first week of school. It is the student’s responsibility to take the initiative to make up any tests or graded assignments. Due dates for any previously scheduled tests, projects, etc. still stand.
Please refer to the GMS Agenda Book page 10 and the SCS Handbook pages 5 – 7 for additional information.
Communication regarding lesson plans and grades on-line – This information will be sent home soon.
Conferences – If you need to schedule a conference, please let one of your child’s teachers know which morning at 7:15 is convenient for you. We will e-mail you with the verified day.
Dress Code – All students should dress in a manner that meets the GMS standardized dress code. Please refer to page 12 of the GMS Agenda Book for a complete copy.
Grading Scale - The grading scale for Shelby County Schools is: (SCS Handbook page 9)
A = 93 – 100
B = 85 – 92
C = 75 – 84
D = 70 - 74
F = below 70
Homework – We usually do not give too much written homework. We encourage you to help with homework, but we want the child to do the work. Credit is given for completion. This will count when averaging 9-week grades. Also, part of homework is being responsible enough to get it to class. We do NOT accept excuses.
Papers – Graded papers are to be kept in the back of the child’s notebook behind a “TEST” divider. We courage you to review these graded papers weekly. They do not have to be signed and returned.
Textbooks – All textbooks must be covered by Friday, August 17. We do have a set of Writing and Grammar books that will remain in the classroom for student use. Therefore, the Writing and Grammar book that is issued to your child can stay at home, but it will be collected at the end of the year. (GMS Agenda Book, page 14).
Report Card Dates – The interim and report card dates will be added to your child’s agenda book this week.
Responsibility - Responsibility is a major concern with middle school students. Sixth graders are old enough to start taking care of their own things. We will not allow students to return to their lockers for items they have forgotten nor will we keep up with their belongings. We will spend the first week teaching responsibility, going over procedures, and labeling items.
Important Dates, Meetings, and Holidays – These are listed in the SCS Handbook on page 1 and the GMS Agenda Book on page 3.
Supplies – Please check with your child weekly about their school supplies. It is necessary for your child to have supplies in order to actively participate in class, and they will need to be replenished periodically.
Discipline Procedures - We encourage children to use good manners and make the right choices. We prefer the use of e-mail during school hours. We can e-mail you concerns or observations regarding behavior so you are aware of your child’s actions in the classroom. As a parent, this provides you with the opportunity to support us by handling the situation accordingly. If a discipline problem does persist, the teacher will document infractions. After two behavioral infractions, we will contact you. At that time, we may need to schedule a conference or after school detention. According to page 10 of the GMS Agenda Book, fighting, stealing, disrespect, insubordination, and defiant attitude toward faculty and staff are NOT tolerated and will be dealt with by the administration. These infractions and office referrals will result in a lower conduct grade. However, if the child’s behavior consistently improves, the teacher reserves the right to raise their conduct grade.
PTA Handbook – The 2007 – 2008 PTA handbook will be available on-line. A link to this information will be found on the GMS intranet site which your child will receive the first week of school.
Reminder – If you ever have questions, please e-mail us and we will answer them promptly.
